At 9am I arrived at my loctician's house and he said my hair was too straight because of me hand blow drying it so he rewashed my hair, then I sat under the dryer so it could be more coarse. I officially got my 1st lock at 10:15am and my last lock at 12:05am so it took aprrox. 15 hours total, in a 1 day session. My locks are both small and medium. I have approx. 450-500 sisterlocks. One day I will count when I am bored...lol I will return in 6 weeks for my 1st wash and retightening session (which will last 1-1.5 hours)! I sat in the chair with a lunch and dinner break for about 15hours and good thing I only have to do it once! Yay! My loctitian applied a setting mousse and rolled up my locks and I sat under the dryer for 30 minutes. Now I am sporting a small curly fro. My hair is 5-8 inches long but appears much shorter now bc of my curls. With a cute headband and pair of earrings this a.m. I was good to go! I am in an awkward stage right now but look forward to the transformation my hair will take. My son loves the style and they can't keep from touching mommy's new hair! I made a trip to Sally's to get a few essentials: a silk scarf wrap, soft bendable rollers, a shower cap, spray bottle for misting my hair before rolling, bobby pins (for styling)and some cute earrings! Now I plan to go through my hair stuff and donate straightening combs, brushes, combs, etc! But I am keeping my Chi flatirons bc Sisterlocks are small enough to curl! Here are some pics below of Day 1...I can't wait to play around with so many styling options!

-What are Sisterlocks?-
"Sisterlocks is a trademark company founded in 1993 by Dr. JoAnne Cornwell. The Home Office is in San Diego, California, and there are trained practitioners and Certified Training Associates in over 30 other states. The company has developed an innovative approach to marketing its natural hair care system to African American women. The company motto says it all: “Sisterlocks is not about a hairstyle, it’s about a lifestyle.” Sisterlocks invites women who are interested in self-empowerment and cultural self expression, to embrace a natural hair care system that is self-affirming and truly gorgeous." -http://www.sisterlocks.com/index.html

6 more days until my hair is free!
Greetings!
This is my 1st time blogging ever! I decided to take a break from taking down my micro-mini braids done at a African braiding shop. Ooooh the pain and time that I had to endure to get this braiding style that is temporary along with the time I have to put into taking my hair down. The braiders braided so tight I twisted and turn and the chair and swore it would be the last time I would endure such pain for any hair style. I had been researching sisterlocks for about a year now and looking for certified and recommended loctictians after doing my homework and meeting my sisterlocks loctitian Robert Coleman-Gladdis in Kalamazoo, MI I will begin my journey to sisterlocks August 29, 2009 at 9am! As a African American woman, trying to keep up with the Hollywood ideals of beauty can be harmful to the self-esteem, dangerous, tiring, painful, etc. ie chemical relaxers, heat, afraid for others to see new growth or our hair natural. Here are the reasons I am moved to join many of the women across the world in getting my sisterlocks, kept short and sweet:
1) Freedom
2) No chemical relaxers
3) I can workout and swim w/o the stress of ruining my hair
4)Endure hot weather with no problems
5) So many styling options
6)Natural
7)My hair is naturally coarse and this is one of the style's where that is a GOOD thing
8) Low maintenance
9)My self estemm will only increase bc hair will be beautiful and MINE
10) Sisterlocks will be a journey for me, day 1 will be so diiferent form month 1 and so on.
11) Wake up and go style
12) My hair will begin to grow like weeds bc it will be healthy and chemical free
13) My husband can run his fingers through my hair and I wont have to worry about him discovering a track or painful braids...lol
Probably another 3 hours before my braids are completely down, and my hair dried. To be continued....
